Main Street Renewal Public Meeting (4/30)

The City of Lynchburg and Appalachian Power invite the public to attend a joint informational meeting regarding the Main Street Renewal Project on Tuesday, April 30.  The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn (601 Main Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504) at 7 PM. 

The Main Street Renewal Project is scheduled to begin in mid-September 2019.  At this meeting, representatives from the City of Lynchburg and Appalachian Power will discuss preliminary project details, including a predicted start date for construction, the estmated project duration, and tentative block-by-block phasing.   More detailed project information regarding parking, business and residential access, and detours will be discussed at a second meeting that will be scheduled for late Summer 2019.  Several other downtown projects, however, will be addressed at this meeting, including Appalachian Power’s current work in the downtown area and the City’s planned refurbishment of the Midtown Parking Deck. 

Last summer, the City of Lynchburg and Appalachian Power announced a partnership to invest  $17 million in the downtown Lynchburg area.  This joint Main Street Renewal Project will replace aging waterlines, update streetscape features on Main Street and Tenth Street, and modernize the underground electrical system to improve reliability and provide for future development.

Appalachian Power’s underground equipment on Main Street was installed in the 1930’s. The company will replace the aging system with new wire, transformers, concrete vaults, manholes and grates. This capital improvement project will not only improve the quality and reliability of the electric service, but also will allow for faster restoration times when power outages do occur.

This project is the second phase of the City of Lynchburg’s multi-phased Downtown Renewal Program which will replace and update water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure.  After both organizations complete their underground infrastructure upgrades, the City will restore each block with updated streetscape features that encourage an enhanced pedestrian and vehicular experience.  Features will include new brick sidewalks, historically-designed streetlights, new trees and plantings, and redesigned parking and loading zone areas.
