Project Update – June 18, 2019
Mid-way through June and Appalachian Power’s work is in full swing downtown! Crews are ready to pave Eleventh Street and reopen it to traffic, and the underground electrical vault work on Tenth and Ninth Streets is progressing right on schedule.
Eleventh Street Vault
Last week, crews from Lynchburg Water Resources relocated a water service connection from Eleventh Street to Main Street for a customer. Now that the water and sewer issues are resolved on this block, Eleventh Street can be paved and reopened.
Look for an asphalt crew to begin paving Eleventh Street this week and for the block to be reopened to traffic by Friday!
Tenth Street Vault
On Tenth Street this week, crews from Appalachian Power are continuing to excavate the old electrical vault located near the intersection of 10th St. and Main St. In order to do this work, they have needed to relocate existing electrical wire and dig around other utilities, something that has slowed their work down a little.
Construction on this block began on April 29 and the street is closed to through-traffic. However, the on-street handicap parking on Tenth Street is still available for those needing to access City Hall and all parking lots located off Tenth Street are available to permitted vehicles.
This project is on-schedule and is expected to be completed by mid/late-July.
Lower Ninth Street Vault
Last week, crews finished pouring the concrete for the underground electrical vault’s walls and top. This work required them to build complex wooden forms for the vault in order to shape the concrete.
This week, crews will work on installing the grating that is visible at the street-level.
The project is on schedule and the street should reopen in mid-July.
After Eleventh Street is reopened this Friday, Appalachian Power will continue its work on both Ninth and Tenth Streets. This work is on-schedule and will be completed in mid-July.
After Appalachian Power completes its work on Tenth Street, some private development work will occur on 9th Street between Main Street and Church Street. As soon as this work is scheduled, a press release will be issued with specific details.
If you park in the Midtown Parking Deck, that City deck is under construction until September 2019. Look for more updates on the City website via this link.
